Speaking as a previous international student! Do your self a favour and Do not join this program. No one will ever have a good Canadian experience. All your host family cares about is money and your home stay coordinator doesn't care about you.
It runs like a foster care system. They make up lies and get you in trouble with the so called coordinator. It's a shame I gotta make it public after 21 years! But I gotta be brutally honest to keep another human from being traumatized like I did

Please do not send your kids to this program. Their host families are TERRIBLE. And they are aware of this but they don't do anything. Me and all of my friends regretted coming to Nova Scotia, there is literally nothing to do in the small towns of Nova Scotia, they can't even go outside without a car, because towns are unwalkable. Host families are mean towards students, most of the host families don't care about hosting a student, they do this for money. I had a terrible experience with my host family and homestay coordinators do not help students at all. As the person above me said, it's a really traumatic experience for teenagers.

Solo os puedo compartir la experiencia de mi hijo. Es una zona superaislada, no hay casi de nada y los pueblos son muy muy pequeños. Mi hijo se tuvo que cambiar dos veces de familia, en una de las casas no había calefacción en las habitaciones. Y estamos hablando de Canadá. ¿No hay filtro para elegir a las familias? Solo les interesa el dinero. Si podéis es mejor invertir un poco más e ir a otra zona más cerca de una ciudad.
Yo no se lo recomendaría a nadie.

Our 15 years old daughter spent one semester in Nova Scotia under the supervision of NSISP.
Great experience with the high school, but traumatic experience with homestay.
Our daughter had to change homestay families 5 times in 5 months, including one commando-like exfiltration. And with another family we found out that she lost almost one kilo per week due to food limitations.
In addition, local NSISP contacts were of little help.
My advice: this can be great for young adults able to manage difficult/challenging situations, but it can traumatic (and I am weighing my words) for teenagers not used to cope on their own with tough challenges.
