We chose Mike Brandsma based on his positive Google reviews, but our experience was far from satisfactory. We typically only write reviews when the service is either exceptionally good or extremely poor. Given that this deal involved a nearly torpedoed real estate transaction, the stress caused by the communication failure made it necessary for us to share our experience.

Things started off well with Mike, with fairly standard communication. However, as we progressed, the situation deteriorated significantly. By the time we had an accepted offer, the service was far from acceptable. With almost no proactive contact until the final day we had to remove conditions, we were anxiously waiting for confirmation of our mortgage approval. Just hours before our deadline, Mike messaged us to inform us that we had been approved, but the details were incorrect, reflecting the price of a previous property which we had since passed up making an offer on. This error was troubling, but what followed was even more concerning.

When we realized the mistake and urgently reached out for clarification and assistance, Mike ceased all communication, leaving us in a stressful and time-sensitive predicament. Despite our desperate pleas for a phone call to resolve the issue, we received no response, forcing us to scramble for a solution on our own. Our realtor eventually was able to get ahold of Mike’s office only to be told Mike had a personal emergency, with no further information on how we were to proceed.

We then had to scramble like mad to not only get an extension for our conditions but find a mortgage broker who could get us approved in less than half of the time that Mike was given, which thankfully we were able to do. After a week of hearing no further explanation from Mike’s office or Mike himself, we wrote an email to understand what had happened. While his response included an apology, it felt dismissive and lacked responsibility for the serious error.

Mike would later cite the personal emergency as the reason for his absence and breeze over the error in the mortgage approval as simply a typo. Regardless of whether it was a typo or not, we had not secured financing on our last day of conditions, and neither he nor his office provided any support, notification of Mike’s absence, or even direction on how to proceed. Consequently, we had to secure an approval with another broker under severe time constraints. Mike would later indicate that the approval was only valid if a co-signer was present, which was yet another bit of information that could have derailed our entire process as we had no co-signer as an option.

There were additional issues with Mike and his office that made our experience even more frustrating than what we’ve outlined here. However, to avoid making this review excessively long, we’ve focused on the main points.

Overall, our experience with Mike Brandsma was marked by poor communication and unprofessional handling of our mortgage application. We cannot recommend his services and advise others to seek more reliable and responsive mortgage brokers.
